Even though I am not a big supporter of Hawking's theories I am afraid his opinion about alien life should be considered carefully.

Here on earth, we have a tremendous amount of species that evolved. When we look at them, we will easily see species that have developed marvellous techniques in various fields. Take for example termites. Their hills are really a great work of engineering. They have their own air conditioning, internal air humidity control, different chambers for different tasks and so on. This is also true for many other species such as bees, spiders, beavers etc.

Now, Imagine, termites on earth survive another billion years or more while other dominant species such as Homo sapiens disappear. It is well possible that these termites evolve to a super species dominating the earth while remaining termites. It is also might be possible that termites one day develop huge interstellar spaceships and start colonizing other planets.

One may argue that termites would never be able to develop such high technology without any knowledge of engineering and science. But don't forget that if humans were to construct a building of the same proportion with the same kind of functions as termites already do, we would need some of world’s best civil engineers and architects, a lot of engineering and gigantic machines. Termites do this without any knowledge as we posses. Evolution is a process whose products can be beyond any imagination. Given enough time and resources anything is possible. In the field of evolutionary biology Richard Dawkins called this phenomenon the extended phenotype.

I can well imagine that life may have evolved on other planets. I have no logical reason to assume that a dominant alien life form must have evolved the same way as humans on this planet. It is well imaginable that an alien life form has billions of years of evolution behind it and achieved the state where it can undertake interstellar travel to colonize or if you like to raid resourceful planets while it remains from our perspective "termites", i.e. no consciousness, no arts, literature, philosophy, no empathy for life or anything human like.

So, what should we expect if one of these aliens visit our planet? Do you expect to have dinner party with them or discuss moral philosophy? No, absolutely not. We would be nothing more for them than food and that's it.

It is now very fashionable to see human beings as evil and destructive. Although it is not a new paradigm (every major religion is based on this), it is taking very much momentum in this new millennia. Nevertheless it is still only us who take the time to reflect, ponder and discuss about our actions and thoughts. No other species have accomplished it on earth and it might be very likely that these unique properties of human evolution are very unique in the entire universe.

But don’t forget that if humans were to construct a building of the same proportion with the same kind of functions as termites already do, we would need some of world’s best civil engineers and architects, a lot of engineering and gigantic machines. Termites do this without any knowledge as we posses. Evolution is a process whose products can be beyond any imagination. Given enough time and resources anything is possible. In the field of evolutionary biology Richard Dawkins called this phenomenon the extended phenotype.

well said Michael. its funny how it never occurs to him that the psychopaths might not be running the show in an advanced civilization. it never occurs to him that they probably left the state with all of its murder, theft and other abuses behind long before they discovered FTL travel. he must not really be all that smart after all lol
