Have you not read the original bitcoin research paper (available at bitcoin.org) that said, &quot;... if honest nodes control a majority of CPU power.&quot;

There are many things the state could do: 1) take down bitcoin.org or any other big websites that have the bitcoin client. Without the client, there is no bitcoin. They can just say it&#039;s used for money laundering, the media will repeat it, and it&#039;s done; 2) Disallow credit card companies and banks for converting dollars to bitcoins. This leaves only the miners, and no way for an average person to partake in bitcoin unless they mine (maybe this is the escape hatch?)

The bootstrapping is the hardest part. If it gets past that, then it has a good chance. So bootstrapping has to occur very quickly.
