California (BCAX) has paid Lina Manglicmot $1.5 million since 2005, an average of $253,530 a year, to work as a prison nurse in the agricultural town of Soledad.
Manglicmot is one of 42 state nurses who each made more than $1 million in those six years, mostly by tapping overtime, according to payroll data compiled by Bloomberg News. Together, those nurses collected $47.5 million. In 2008, Manglicmot was paid $331,346, including $211,257 in overtime.
In response to this insanity, Lanny Ebenstein, an economics lecturer at UC Santa Barbara, said:
“California taxpayers should be outraged,” said Lanny Ebenstein, an economics lecturer at the University of California at Santa Barbara and president of the California Center for Public Policy, a research institution critical of public-sector compensation. “Taxpayers should insist that this is no longer acceptable because what government does is important and it’s important that government run effectively.”
You’ll have to excuse my French, but what the fuck kind of a response is that?
I’m a California tax payer and I am more outraged at Ebenstein’s response than by the fact that some nurse sucked down over a million in overtime pay. Ebenstein is also a government employee, and as such, my money goes to fund his ridiculous nonsense full time! At least the nurse was doing something productive for society.
“Taxpayers should insist that this is no longer acceptable because what government does is important and it’s important that government run effectively.” - Please explain Lanny how taking millions of my tax dollars and handing it to nurses is somehow important? Why can’t nurses be paid through voluntary free markets based on the quality of the service they provide? Why must the State hold a gun to my head, take my money, and then hand it to people like you and Ms. Manglicmot?
I assume you feel this is quite an important function of government because you are the one getting my god damn money! – right LARRY? Sorry, LANNY? Whatever your name is.
I fail to see how anything the government does is “important” enough that it must hold a gun to my head and take my money from me by force. Tell me Lanny, which functions of government are worthy enough that the State should engage in acts of violence against perfectly peaceful citizens in order to steal their money to fund the services provided? Which functions Larry? Point them out to me so that I may evaluate these functions for myself.
You’re paying for this nonsense; coming from an economics “lecturer” no less. This is the kind of crap your kids’ heads are being filled with. This is the kind of nonsensical garbage the State preaches to your children. His statement makes no sense what-so-ever. “Government is important;” therefore, people should be mad that its going about doing what it normally does, which is rob some people to enrich others. This makes no sense at all. Lanny acts as if the world would come to a halt if government failed to rob people to provide services the public obviously does not want. If the public actually wanted the services provided, the people would pay for them voluntarily!
I don’t know why this particular article put me off so badly. I see this kind of drivel every day. Perhaps its because it is coming from an economics “lecturer” that it makes me so furious. It infuriates me to think that some child is learning economics from this violence supporting clown.
