Officers said Deangelo Mitchell convinced his brother, 20-year-old Wayne Mitchell, to swallow the ounce of cocaine to hide the evidence. He died soon afterward. [In order to prevent themselves from being charged with possession.]
I’m sure the DEA and Office of National Drug Control Policy will be including this death in their statistics of overdoses, which they love to fear-monger with.
I have to wonder how many other overdose incidents are related to the fact that drugs are illegal in the first place. I’d wager the number is probably quite large. A professional economic analysis of this of this hypothesis is warranted.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out that a large percentage of overdoses come from people trying to hide drugs from law enforcement. Either by hiding drugs in their body by swallowing condoms full of cocaine to smuggle them, or eating them when faced with a police search. While certainly there are a few people who die from accidental overdose, most people tend to be quite cautious when it comes to ingesting substances that could potentially kill them.
