The “anarchist” website 325.nostate recently issued a proclamation that declares a guerrilla war against Olympic organizers,
“In the United Kingdom of clockwork control and domestication, we’re some of the ‘unpatriotic ones’ who find the 2012 Olympics, with the ensuing spectacle of wealth (when so many here struggle to feed themselves and their families), harmful developments and escalating police state, frankly offensive.
“But no union or movement calls our shots, and we have no inhibition to use guerrilla activity to hurt the national image and paralyze the economy however we can. Because simply, we don’t want rich tourists – we want civil war.”
The reason why I bring your attention to this nonsense is because I happen to be a real anarchist, and what these clowns are doing has nothing to do with the philosophy of anarchism and everything to do with spreading chaos and materialism. The goal of this warning is not to spread the message of voluntary human interaction, but rather to create a state of fear that causes people to associate ‘anarchism’ with chaos, while at the same time reinforcing the belief that the state is necessary to ‘protect’ civilized society from roving bands of brigands.
Militant ‘anarchist’ organizations are generally operated by government intelligence agencies. The state has a very powerful incentive to bind the definition of anarchy to that of chaos and civil war within the public consciousness. War is the health of the state, and I am sure that groups like the “International Revolutionary Front” understand this concept completely. No right minded anarchist would ever engage in activities that gave the state more power, more influence, more reason to be clung to by the population. The leaders of these groups are not anarchists at all. In fact, they are government agents themselves, who are out looking to ensnare dim witted jobless young men in a sting or false flag operation. State agents were caught in the act of provocateuring at the G20 summit, and are suspected of provocateuring under the guise of being ‘anarchists’ at dozens of other protests were violence has erupted.
Anarchy itself simply means the absence of rulers. It does not mean chaos, war, or the absence of rules. Under a system of anarchy, all interactions between humans are voluntary. See this lecture by economist David Friedman that provides an overview of what an entirely voluntary society might look like. The voluntary society is not something that violent teenage rioters espouse, rather it is something that Harvard trained historians, prominent investment brokers, and New York University trained economists have all advocated for. Real anarchist philosophy has nothing to do with riots or warfare; and in fact has everything to do with the exact opposite of those things.
Of course, that is not the message the mainstream media or the state want you to hear. They want you to hear the word ‘anarchism’ and immediately associate it with Unibombers, violent riots, and Molotov cocktails. They don’t want you to think about what the word actually means. They don’t want you digging up anarchist philosophers like Rothbard, Molyneux or Spooner. The idea of voluntarism is the most dangerous thing to the state. Nothing will give a bureaucrat sleepless nights like people waking up to the coercion that underlies all state action.
Real anarchism is about peace and property rights. It has nothing to do with socialism, rioting, chaos, or any other form of violence or violent coercion. Anarchists who claim as much are not anarchists at all; they are state actors doing the state’s bidding.
