A state doesn’t need explicitly racist laws to act from a place of racial hatred and fear, as Taylor said. The decision to secede from the US, in the case of many of these petitions, is a response to bureaucratic measures that pre-existed Obama, were (in the case of the NDAA) spearheaded by the Republican Party (however, disappointingly not vetoed by Obama) and simply misinformed in the case of the Affordable Health Care Act. Fox News and other right-wing media, churches, militants and other people with loud voices, have instigated a climate of fear that is related to the other-ness, not just of Obama, but the non-white-men who voted him in (African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and women). Obama is a pressure point for this fear because of his race. His political views and acts are moderate, even conservative, so if America thinks that he’s taking us on this wild liberal/socialist ride, they’ve been watching too much Fox News.

Well consider a few things.

Slavery can only be imposed by agents of the state. It would cost far to much to keep slaves imprisoned by a private enterprise when they could simply pay workers a salary and forgo the costs of keeping them imprisoned as slave labor.

It takes a state to enact Jim Crow laws. Most private businesses would not engage in such racist behavior because such behavior limits their customer base, thereby putting them at a competitive disadvantage.

In fact, to have any racist laws at all, it takes a state. Secession, when taken to its ultimate form of anarchism, leads to a situation where people can be free to be as racist as they want to be, but no matter how racist they may be, a majority of them will never be able to impose their viewpoints upon a minority like they can through a political system.
