  • Denver Collects Fines On Drivers Who Stop At Red Lights

The city of Denver is bringing in thousands of dollars in fines every year by ticketing people who stop at red lights. They are ticketed because their tire goes over the white line that marks where the vehicle should stop.

The red light cameras at various intersections in the city will flash and the driver will be sent a $75 citation if the vehicle goes over the white line, even if the driver stops for the light.

“They are stealing money. Who has extra money to pay?” asked one driver.

  • James Grant, Ron Paul's Pick For Fed Chair, Speaks On The Fed

James Grant of Grant's Interest Rate Observer (http://www.grantspub.com/) and James Turk of the GoldMoney Foundation discuss the history and mission of the Fed, how mission creep has taken it wildly beyond its initial purpose into the territory of QE, ZIRP and other fiat currency experiments.

They talk about who benefit from zero interest rates and how savers are penalized by this easy money policy. They explain that the US have been off the gold standard since 1913, Bretton Woods being only a shadow of the classical gold standard. In the last 40 years low interest rates have encouraged leverage and speculation, which have reached incredible levels.

They discuss the fiscal profligacy of the US government. A solution to debt levels could still be found if the political will existed. US strengths and positive momentum could still be harnessed to save the dollar if people's eyes could be opened. However they conclude that every paper currency in history has eventually gone to zero.

James and Jim also talk about ZIRP and the absence of the bond vigilantes after over 30 years of bull market in bonds. How traders no longer care about fundamentals, like balance sheets, but rather focus on very short time horizons and the spreads between funding costs and yields. How this situation is unsustainable.

They see gold still as a very under-owned, misunderstood and marginal asset still shunned by institutional investors, with a few notable exceptions which indicate that the tide could be turning. They see a gold standard in the future, although timing is always uncertain.

At the end they talk about the history of US post civil war specie resumption and parallels to a return to the gold standard in the future. Private alternatives and competing currencies are a possibility; if politicians are too slow to provide solutions the market could do it for them.

  • Cuba legalizes sale, purchase of private property

HAVANA (AP) — Cuba announced Thursday it will allow real estate to be bought and sold for the first time since the early days of the revolution, the most important reform yet in a series of free-market changes under President Raul Castro.

The law, which takes effect Nov. 10, applies to citizens living in Cuba and permanent residents only, according to a red-letter headline on the front page of Thursday's Communist Party daily Granma and details published in the government's Official Gazette.

The law limits Cubans to owning one home in the city and another in the country, an effort to prevent the accumulation of large real estate holdings. It requires that all real estate transactions be made through Cuban bank accounts so that they can be better regulated, and says the transactions will be subject to bank commissions.

  • Pelosi: Gov't Should Shut Down Plant Where Workers Refuse to Unionize

Heritage finds a nice catch in this CNBC interview with Nancy Pelosi last week, as Maria Bartiromo queries Barack Obama’s favorite House Speaker on the role of government in business expansion. Should agencies like the NLRB have the authority to shut down private-sector plants simply for not being unionized? Pelosi barely waits for the question to conclude before blurting out her “yes.”

  • Man Defends Himself In Marijuana Jury Nullification Case

Last week at a pre-trial hearing in central Jersey’s Burlington County, “judge” Charles Delehey made a number of sweeping orders, which Babb summarized:

    1) Ed has been forbidden to defend himself. The “judge” feels there is too great a chance of a mistrial.
    2) Ed has been forbidden to mention jury nullification.
    3) Ed has been forbidden to mention that he is a California licensed medical marijuana patient or that NJ is now in the process of establishing a medical marijuana program.

Basically, Ed is being blocked from making any meaningful defense. Facing the strong possibility of jail, Ed chose to have bone tumor removed from his leg prior to the “trial.” The judge granted his request for a 6 month continuance for Ed to recover. Ed had a similar condition the last time he was in jail. He was given aspirin for 8 months until an outside physician came to his rescue. Avoiding this situation again is very important.
