Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics, presents a seminar on the impact of fructose and ethanol on the body.  This seminar has around 5 million views and counting.  If you’ve never seen it before, I highly recommend taking the time to watch it.  The information being presented here priceless.

The Bitter Truth video was shot back in 2009.  There’s also a more recent addendum video that covers the sugar problem from a broader statistical perspective.  I highly recommend watching both.

It’s worth noting that I believe humans were born to eat fruit, just like chimps.  Our digestive systems are virtually identical.  Don’t let Lustig’s lecture turn you off from fruit.  As Lustig readily admits, fruit comes packaged with the antidote – fiber.  So don’t be afraid to eat a ton of fruit.  The bad sugars are the refined and added sugars that we find in virtually everything these days.

Obviously I don’t agree with Lustig’s repeated calls for government regulation and taxation of the sugar market, but the factual information provided on the harms caused by sugar consumption are worth listening to.

And now for a special treat.

If you want to see how a huge chunk of the sugar you consume on a daily basis is harvested around the world, watch this:

I doubt you’ll be able to make it through the whole video without vomiting.

I didn’t think I’d be able to sit through an hour and a half long video about sugar, but I couldn’t stop watching once I started. The addendum video is very good as well. Thanks for posting this.
